Dental Insurance vs. Dental Discount Plan: What’s the Difference?

August 26, 2019

Dental care is an important component of your health. Unfortunately, not everyone has dental coverage.

However, if you’re uninsured, that doesn’t mean you need to choose between your dental health and paying astronomical prices.

Keep reading to learn what options exist for those of us who don’t have dental insurance.

What is Dental Insurance?

Dental insurance is a category of health insurance that pays for dental care and procedures. Typically, it operates by collecting a monthly fee, and in turn covers some or all of your dental care.

If you or your spouse’s employer provides dental insurance, it probably makes sense for you to explore that as an option. Paying for an individual plan is another option, however, it tends to be more costly than insurance through an employer.

Most often, dental insurance will cover 100% of your preventative costs, which usually means 2 dental cleanings, 2 exams, and 1 set of X-rays per year. Coverage levels vary greatly, so make sure you do your research. There are certain insurance plans that have a maximum spending limit, and others that don’t.

What is a Dental Discount Plan?

Dental discount plans are in-house dental plans offered by dental offices. Typically, they operate under an annual flat fee. Plans vary, but annual fees typically run between $150 to $350 per year, and result in discounted rates on dental services.

As long as your teeth are in good condition, discount plans are usually a better value than paying out of pocket for individual dental insurance.

Dental discount plans give you the same quality dental care. However, the one caveat is that if you need to see multiple specialists, a dental discount plan may not be a good fit. If you need regular preventative care, discount plans are usually a good value.
